Carrying on the Legacy of a True Legend
Before she launched her public relations agency in 1984, Myra Borshoff made a bold move: she reached out to Edward Bernays, often hailed as the “Father of PR,” in New York City. Eager for a treasure trove of insights, Myra entered the meeting with her notebook ready. But what unfolded was unexpected; Bernays spent most of the time asking her questions and truly listening. It was a powerful lesson in the importance of listening first and asking smart questions—one that Myra would carry into her agency. This approach has become a cornerstone of Borshoff’s philosophy, fostering successful, trusting client relationships that have thrived for four decades.
As we celebrate our 40th Anniversary, affectionately known as our “Shoffiversary,” I’m met with enthusiastic reactions like, “Wow, 40 years!” and “Congrats, that’s incredible!” It’s a momentous milestone, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Reflecting on my journey here since 1997, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together, honoring Myra’s legacy while evolving our services and broadening our impact.
One of the most meaningful aspects of Borshoff for me is our status as a women-owned business. Myra was a true trailblazer, setting a powerful standard for women leaders not only in our industry but also throughout our city and state. Her unmatched energy, innovative mindset and keen business acumen propelled our agency forward and inspired countless others around her.
Being a woman-led business brings a unique distinction. We are empathetic, nurturing, and approachable, building our foundation on relationships, integrity and trust. These principles drive our internal culture and shape our interactions with clients.
Guided by Myra’s vision, we’ve implemented progressive workplace policies, including flexible and part-time work schedules and the pioneering “Bring Your Baby to Work” program for parents with infants. I was the second parent to participate with my son, an experience that provided invaluable flexibility for my family and support for my career.
Myra’s influence resonates deeply, much like the ruby—a symbol of our 40 years—radiating wisdom, energy and vitality. Here are some of the guiding principles we carry forward:
- Foster a culture of creativity where ideas and problem-solving flow freely
- Ask questions that uncover root issues and promote understanding
- Build a strong network, both inside and outside the business, as relationships are the hallmark of success
- Seek out partners and people who share your passion
- Think big and strive to make an impact
- Give back to the community and nurture the people and places around you
At Borshoff, our mission is to help brands make meaningful connections that make a significant impact on the world. We owe this to the incredible people who have made this place special and to the partners, clients and community members who support our mission. Thanks to Myra, a legend in her own right, for having the courage and vision to start something that continues to grow and make an impact. Here’s to #40andforward!
